Dark City: Homecoming

John Murdoch returns to a physically failing city where incomplete memories, divided survivors, and evidence that the Strangers may not be gone force a deeper question: is home the place they escaped from, the Earth they barely remember, or the society they choose to build together?

Aurora Design Studios visual development for Dark City: Homecoming, showing John Murdoch facing a failing constructed city and the lingering presence of the Strangers.

Adaptation Workflow

Existing Spec Script → Novel Development → Novel Canon Lock → Revised Spec Screenplay.

The 153-page source contains enough world, civic, and psychological material to support novel development, but a later screenplay pass should compress and restructure it after the book establishes the final canon.

Title-control note: the source title page omits “2.” This Phase 2.3 family therefore uses Dark City: Homecoming as the controlled daughter-page title while preserving the existing route for website continuity.

Public Script Summary

Dark City: Homecoming begins after John Murdoch has won control of the city but not certainty about what any of its people truly are. The structure around them is failing. John's memories of Earth remain incomplete, and the survivors have split into competing visions of the future. One group wants to stop chasing a possibly unreachable past and make a permanent home from the world they have. Another believes Earth must still be found, even if the search endangers the fragile society that has begun to emerge. John and Emma carry the emotional center of that conflict. Clara Bumstead offers a credible political argument against sacrificing the present for an uncertain origin, while engineer Malcolm Greene believes the machinery can be understood, repaired, and repurposed. Their disagreement widens when a damaged message from Schreber suggests the Strangers may not truly be gone and Mr. Hand begins exploiting distrust among the survivors. The screenplay then expands beyond the old claustrophobic streets. Settlement zones, forests, valleys, crystalline structures, encoded messages, and a deeper constructed network reveal that the city was never the whole experiment. The setting becomes a test of whether people assembled from manipulated memories can create institutions that are more honest than the civilization that made them. Family life, markets, governance, education, engineering labor, resource shortages, and ordinary routines matter because survival is no longer only about defeating the Strangers; it is about learning how not to reproduce their methods. Late in the story, a crystalline entity carries knowledge of the Strangers' collapsing world and reframes the original experiment as part of a larger survival cycle. John, Emma, Clara, and Malcolm ultimately choose movement over stasis, boarding a vessel powered by the recovered shard and heading toward a distant alien structure. The title becomes deliberately ironic: home is not simply Earth or the city. It is something the survivors must consciously create.
