Budgeting • Cost Tracking • Development Spend

Finance

A governance overview for budgeting, project-level cost control, publishing income, rights revenue, and evidence-based development spend.

Expense Log

Track registrations, software, art, contests, editing, legal, and web costs.

Project ROI

Separate passion projects from market-facing development candidates.

Lean First

Spend only when it improves professional readiness.

Project-level financial control

Each property should have a separate record of direct costs, contractual commitments, advances, royalties, licensing income, reimbursable expenses, and outstanding obligations. Company-wide totals are not a substitute for knowing what each project consumes and returns.

Development ledger

Editing, art, software, research, registration, contest, legal, web, travel, and production-preparation costs.

Contract ledger

Advances, commissions, royalties, reserve terms, recoupment, payment dates, audit windows, and tax documentation.

Rights ledger

Income and obligations separated by property, format, territory, language, licensee, term, and exclusivity.

Financial decision rules

  • Do not spend heavily to protect every speculative title before the underlying project is commercially credible.
  • Do consider patent and disclosure timing before public release of patentable technical ideas.
  • Compare publishing offers on royalty basis, escalators, rights scope, accounting, reversion, and obligations—not advance alone.
  • Require written scope and acceptance criteria before paying editors, artists, consultants, or production vendors.
  • Keep personal, company, and project-specific transactions distinguishable for accounting and tax review.
